 Series

Contents of the Collection

Series II. Boeing Company is divided into the following subseries:

Subseries A. Military Aircraft (1940-1959) chronicles CLS’s aircraft projects as Chief Production Test Pilot with the Boeing Company Military Division, specifically the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-29 Superfortress, B-50 Superfortress, B-52 Stratofortress, C-97 Stratofreighter, and the KC-135A Stratotanker. There are 32 black-and-white photographs that capture the aircrafts in flight, featured with crew members, test pilots, such as Tex Johnston, and CLS posed in front of aircraft. In addition, there are textual documents that include flight logs, pilot assignment lists, CLS's business cards, correspondence, clippings, test flight summaries, training certifications, and technical diagram. In addition, there is a copy of testimonies taken from crew members connected to a B-29 aircraft accident in August of 1944.

Subseries B. Commercial Airplane Division (1947-1981) is made up primarily of visual materials including 141 photographs, 286 slides, and 84 negatives. The images feature CLS abroad with other test pilots while they delivered and showcased aircraft from the 700 series. Most of the pictures are of personal snapshots taken by CLS as he traveled to Cairo, Egypt; Eastern Europe; Hong Kong, China; Lisbon, Portugal; and Seoul, Korea. In addition, the series contains receipts, a travel guide, boarding passes, business cards, customs declaration form, loose pages from a notebook with handwritten itineraries, postcards, and correspondence related to CLS’s international travel while working for the Boeing Company Commercial Airplane Division.

Subseries C. Assorted (1936-1983) is a small subseries that consists of 9 photographs and 1 slide that show CLS’s retirement party and other assorted Boeing events. In addition to these materials, there is one file of correspondence, flight logs, and clippings related to CLS’s training with the Boeing School of Aeronautics.

All the files in each of the subseries are organized chronologically.
