Contents of the Collection

Series IV. Personal is divided into the following subseries:

Subseries A. Awards and Associations (1922-2006) contains a mix of visual materials, audiovisual materials, and textual documents. There are 19 photographs, 32 negatives, 3 audiocassettes, and 2 videocassettes. The textual documents include correspondence, membership forms, certificates, newsletters, speech drafts, decals, membership cards, membership list, clippings, event flyers, and programs. A few of the awards CLS are represented in the collection. One of which is the Pathfinder Award from The Museum of Flight that CLS received in 1985. Items related to the event include correspondence, speech drafts with edits, and an audiocassette labeled, "Pathfinder Award, Museum of Flight, CLS practice speech." Some of the associations featured are the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, OX-5 Aviation Pioneers, Quiet Birdmen, Society of Experimental Test Pilots, and the Washington Seaplane Pilots Association. Many of the materials relate to events hosted by the associations and membership documents.

Subseries B. Events and Airshows (1977-1999) consist of visual and audiovisual materials. In total there are 77 photographs, 145 negatives, and 3 videocassettes. There are candid photographs taken by CLS while attending air shows throughout California, Nevada, and Washington. The events are formal in nature, and many of them take place in unidentified locations. Many images feature CLS attending along with friends and colleagues.

Subseries C. Family, Friends, and Travel (1911-2000) consists primarily of visual and audiovisual materials. There are 257 photographs, 1 tintype, 196 negatives, 111 slides, 5 audiocassettes, and 5 videocassettes. These records document CLS’s relationships with his wife Myrtle Irene Scott, other family members, and his close friends. The subseries begins with materials that bring to light aspects of CLS’s early years with his family. There are images of his parents Minnie and Albert Scott, as well as other family members. In addition to the visual materials there is a small amount of textual materials including correspondence, CLS’s high school diploma, a clipping, family birth lists, automobile purchase invoices, insurance policy, as well as grocery receipts, handwritten notes, commercial calculator tables booklet from Albert Scott’s store. The remaining materials are made up of images that capture candid moments as CLS’s travels with family and friends to locations like Palm Springs, California, Mexico, Alaska, and other locations throughout Washington. There are images of CLS at social events and parties with his close friends, as well as images that depict CLS relaxing and featured solo.

Subseries D. Camping and Fishing with Friends (1956-1992) is made up primarily of visual materials with 404 photographs, 86 negatives, and 120 slides. In addition, there are 3 audiocassettes, and small amount of textual documents that include handwritten notes, maps with handwritten annotations, and correspondence. This subseries is similar in nature to Subseries C. in that it captures CLS’s social life with close acquaintances, although with an emphasis on CLS’s fishing and camping adventures throughout the Pacific Northwest. Individuals featured include Al White, Bill Gee, Brien Wygle, Dick Taylor, Don Knutson, Lew Wallick, Palmer Lewis, Robert Mucklestone, Tex Johnston, and Tom Edmonds. The images depict the men fishing on the water, their catches, cooking at the cabin, and relaxing casually with one another. Many of the Jobmaster Company floatplanes are featured in these settings.

Subseries E. Correspondence Files (1929-2006) primarily consists of birthday cards and holiday cards sent to CLS from friends and associates. The birthday celebrations for CLS span from 1992 to his 101st birthday on July 15, 2006. In addition, there are guestbooks, photographs, invitations, booklets, a biographical narrative composed by Dick Taylor, a proclamation from the State of Washington, and a group signed lithograph of B-17G Flying Fortress that complement the birthday cards and the celebrations.

Subseries F. Calendars and Logbooks (1943-1965) features CLS’s logbook for his yacht “Depsy,” along with an accompanying photograph of the yacht from 1943. The calendars contain records of CLS’s planned itinerary with travel and camping. There is one calendar that includes lesson notes for learning Spanish. The personal calendars do contain elements of Jobmaster Company operations.

Subseries G. Collected Textual and Printed Ephemera (1928-2005) is made up of a variety of ephemera collected by CLS throughout the years. Materials consist of clippings, articles, certificate, brochures, travel guides, postcards, cartoons, ink drawings, pencil drawings, advertisements, commemorative envelopes, as well as assorted poems, jokes, quotes, and limericks. Many of the jokes and cartoons are sexual in nature.

Subseries H. Interviews and Biographical Materials (1919-2006) contain the majority of the audiovisual materials in the collection with a total of 10 audiocassettes, and 17 videocassettes. The remaining materials consist of 6 photographs, correspondence, typed drafts, handwritten notes, typed historical narratives, photocopies of flight log pages, correspondence, transcripts, and release forms. The information evident in the subseries illustrates the many facets of CLS’s aviation career throughout the years. Many of the interviews were conducted with CLS by institutions like the Museum of Flight for the Pathfinder Series, the Renton Historical Society, Pearson Field Historical Society, Kiro News, and the Boeing Company. There are biographical materials compiled by Dick Taylor for CLS’s 95th birthday celebration at The Museum of Flight. There is also a file of biographical records compiled by Bill Jepson, a former employee of CLS and former owner of the collection.

Files in subseries A and G are arranged alphabetically, the files in the remaining subseries are arranged chronologically.

There is one personal calendar that includes CLS's lesson notes for learning Spanish. All other materials are in English.

Conditions Governing Access

This collection is open for research and is accessible in the Dahlberg Research Center by appointment. The audiovisual materials have not been reformatted and may not be accessed at this time. For more information contact us.
