From the Series:

Series I. Professional Work (1946-1997) is divided into the following subseries:

Subseries A. Aircraft Flight Tests and Demonstrations dates from 1949 to 1997 and chronicles Wallick’s 35 years of employment as an Experimental Test Flight Pilot with Boeing from 1951 to his retirement in 1986. This subseries is the most extensive part of the collection. It is composed of both visual and textual documents, although it is predominantly comprised of photographic materials, with 821 photographs, 103 slides, and 68 negatives. The photographic materials provide a substantial amount of documentation of Wallick's test and demonstration flights. The textual documents supplementing the visual materials include clippings, correspondence, pilot qualification records, memorandums, reports, news releases, memorandums, invitations, flight logs, hand-written notes, coordination sheets, photocopies of certificates, graphs, meeting minutes, project bulletin, evaluation summaries, technical diagram, agendas, informational leaflets, cacheted covers, fact sheets, business cards, biographical sheets, and postcards.

Due to the vastness of this subseries, it is subdivided into groupings by aircraft projects that Wallick worked on. The materials provide insight into Wallick’s involvement in Boeing’s mid-century military aircraft, as well as the company’s commercial jet 700 series. The subgroupings include U.S. Air Force Military Aircraft (1949-1956); Boeing Model 367-80 "Dash 80" 707 Prototype (1954-1990); Boeing Model 707 (1957-1962); Boeing Model 720 (1959-1961); Boeing Model 727 (1960-1991); Boeing Model 737 (1965-1997); Boeing Model 747 (1969-1983); and Boeing Model 757 and Model 767 (1981-1986).

The first subgroup offers insight into Wallick’s very beginnings with Boeing where he assisted with testing military aircraft like the XB-47D variant of the B-47 Stratojet and the B-52 A Stratofortress. These files contain images of Wallick posed with crewmembers, alongside the XB-47D, as well as piloting the aircraft. There are snapshots captured by Wallick of himself within the cockpit during flight. The clippings highlight the success of the tests and the beginning of Wallick’s career. In addition to the XB-47D and the B-52A, there is also documentation of Wallick testing North American’s F-86 Sabre Jet, as well as Boeing’s YC-14.

The following subgroups within the subseries concern Wallick’s significant role in the testing, demonstration, and engineering development of Boeing’s Model 700 series. The documents capture Wallick working alongside Alvin Melvin "Tex" Johnston in the early 1950s on the Model 367-80 "Dash 80," a prototype for the Model 707 and the KC-135 Stratotanker, up through his demonstration of Boeing’s twin models the 757 and the 767 in the 1980s. The files provide documentation of this period of Wallick’s career and illustrate his achievements and increased seniority at Boeing, where he was promoted to Chief Experimental Test Pilot for the Commercial Airplane division, and later Director of Flight Test.

Within each of the aircraft project subgroupings are materials regarding the flight testing of each aircraft. There are images of Wallick and other pilots performing tests in development stages and for certification. Most of the textual documents from these files detail the development and outcome of the flight tests, as well as provide record of aircraft accidents. There are hand-written notes, coordination sheets, meeting minutes, reports, and of particular note is a typed manuscript written by Wallick titled "Flight Testing the Boeing 727.”

Following the materials related to flight testing for each aircraft are files on flight demonstrations of the 700 aircraft series. Within each project subgrouping there are a large number of images that capture the rollouts, first flights, successive demonstrations, as well as the retirement of each sequential 700 model. There are depictions of crowds at the events, aircraft preparing for takeoff, in flight, and landing. The images also capture press shots of Wallick and fellow test pilots, such as John Armstrong, Tom Edmonds, Ray McPherson, Jack Walden, and Brien Wygle.

Wallick conducted numerous demonstrations for airlines and individualsand many of these demonstration flights are documented in the collection. Some of the airlines featured are Alaska Airlines, Irish International Airlines, Pan American Airlines, Piedmont Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Southeast Asian Airlines, and United Airlines. There are images of Wallick as he traveled to these destinations, as well as the assigned 700 aircraft in flight painted with the in the airline's livery. In addition, the images capture Wallick piloting the jetliners, often seated with various individuals while he conducted flight demonstrations. Of particular interest are the private demonstrations of the 727 that Wallick gave to Peruvian President Fernando Belaúnde Terry in 1964 and of the 757 for Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1982.

Subseries B. Boeing Internal Operations and Employment Records dates from 1946-1993 and contains visual and textual documents that focus on Wallick’s personnel documentation, internal operations of the Flight Test Department at Boeing, and employee recognition events. The subseries is further organized into the following subgroupings:

Wallick Personnel Files (1946-1990); Flight Test Operations (1954-1989); and Retirements and Service Awards (1972-1993).

Wallick’s personnel files consist of professional correspondence, internal memorandums, biographical information, employment history, flight times, and trip reports. There are also a large number of documents related to his compensation and benefits as a test pilot. Included are charts, insurance policies, retirement benefits updates, booklet, certificates, stock options agreements, incentive plans, pay ranges, and performance evaluations. Part of the subgroup also consists of professional photographic portraits of Wallick taken throughout his employment with Boeing. There are also a small number of images of him in the pilot seat, with assorted individuals, as well as images from his work trips. One these photos features Wallick seated in a teahouse in Japan (circa 1950s-1960s).

Of particular significance are the files concerning Wallick’s training at the United States Air Force Experimental Flight Test Pilot School for Boeing. These materials date from 1952 to 1953 and contain coursework, graphs, certificates, protocols, issue slips, Wallick’s notebook that contains hand-written notes, and photographs. One of the photographs depicts the school’s training cohort with Wallick seated in the front row.

Subseries ii. Flight Test Operations materials in this subseries date from 1954 to 1989 and provide documentation on the management, organization, and the internal operations of the Flight Test Department. The files contain primarily textual documents, such as organizational charts, memorandums, progress reports, pilot assignments, meeting minutes, personnel directory, performance reviews, checklists, directives, newsletters, agendas, brochures, and purchase agreements. In addition, there is a court transcript from 1988 of Wallick’s testimony related to a Delta 727 flight accident, along with correspondence and visual documentation of the incident.

There are only a handful of photographic materials in this subgroup, though a couple of interest are images from the early 1950s, one of “Tex” Johnston and Wallick shaking hands, as well as an image of an Experimental Flight Test Pilots meeting being led by Johnston, with Wallick and other test pilots present. There are two copies of this image of the meeting, one of which contains comical speech bubbles that were added to each of the attendees.

Retirements and Service Awards is the final subgroup in the subseries. The materials date from 1972 to 1993 and are primarily made up of photographic materials, that include 271 photographs, 14 slides, and 192 negatives, with the textual documents consisting of only a small number of certificates and correspondence records.

The images depict special ceremonies held for Wallick and other Boeing employees within the Flight Test Department. There are pictures and certificates related to Wallick’s awards throughout his tenure with the company. Also, there exist numerous images of Wallick presenting awards to fellow employees associated with special service awards, work anniversaries, and length of service awards. In addition, there are images from various employee retirement celebrations, some of the individuals include William (Bill) Allen, Don Knutson, Perlie Reese, and Jack Walden.

Lastly, the bulk of the subgroup is made up of photographs taken during Wallick’s retirement party, as well as cards with hand-drawn illustrations of Wallick signed by attendees. These images capture a jovial event with people socializing with one another and individuals giving speeches. The documents bring to light the comradery and support Wallick established with his fellow coworkers at Boeing.
