Series II. Restoration Projects, 1929-1992
Contents of Collection
Series II. Restoration Projects (1929-1992) is divided into the following subseries:
Subseries A. P-12 Model 100 Restoration Project, which dates from 1929 to 1989, is the second largest component of the collection. While the subseries contains a large number of materials, the records are primarily of photographic documentation, with a total of 593 photographs, 194 negatives, and 120 slides. The remaining documents that make up the subseries are textual, as well as original artworks. These materials offer insight into Wallick’s involvement on the P-12 Model 100 restoration project, along with his longtime friends Bob Mucklestone and Orville Tosch.
The subseries has been further divided into subgroupings Restoration Process (1929-1986); Flights and Events (1977-1989); and Artworks (1978-1981).
The first element of the subseries are research files and records from the restoration process. The research files provide documentation on the history and technical information that was used during the restoration project. In addition, there is a scrapbook titled "History of Boeing 100, Army P-12, Navy F4B-1, N872H - S/N-1143." The scrapbook is a compilation of photographs, clippings, invitations, birthday card dedicated to the aircraft for its fiftieth anniversary of service, and news releases. Manuscript drafts and other materials related to Wallick's book Flying the P-12 also provide record of the restoration of the aircraft.
Another aspect of the subgrouping are photographs depicting the arrival of the P-12 at Tosch's restoration company, Aircraft Industries, images of the aircraft prior to being restored, as well as a series of photographs taken of the two owners Wallick and Mucklestone with the unfinished P-12 for publicity purposes.
The textual documents consist of correspondence, logs, workorders, invoices, worksheets, and parts list, clippings, photograph index, drawings and photographs reference list, aircraft lists, photocopies of articles directly related to the involvement of Classic Aircraft Ltd. on the project.
The second component of the subseries focuses on the grand reveal and first flight of the P-12 and Wallick’s sequential flights with the aircraft throughout the Pacific Northwest region. There are materials related to the many fly-ins and events where Wallick sported the aircraft throughout the state of Washington.
Of particular significance are the photographic materials that capture the first and second major flights of the P-12. The images illustrate the inaugural flight of the aircraft from Boeing Field on September 19, 1977. There are a large number of images that show the celebratory roll-out, with Wallick in the pilot seat shaking hands and toasting the crowd with a glass of champagne. Individuals present are Tosch, Mucklestone, his daughter Rebecca Wallick, Bill Allen, as well as other close friends. Along with the festivities there are images that reveal the success of the first anticipated flight of the P-12. There are photographs of Wallick taking off from the runway, in flight, and successfully landing the aircraft back at Boeing Field.
The second major flight of the P-12 took place on October 11, 1977, when Wallick took the aircraft above Seattle and Mount Rainer. There is a long series of images that capture every moment throughout the flight. These images show Wallick taking off from the runway, piloting high above the clouds, with shots of Mount Rainer in the foreground, as well as the aircraft over the city of Seattle with Elliott Bay and the Space Needle present.
Lastly, Artworks, the final subgroup in the subseries, contains seven original acrylic paintings by Uwe Feist, dated in the early 1980s. The paintings visualize the Boeing Model 100 in its various iterations. Most of them depict Wallick piloting the P-12, but there are also some of Milo Burcham, who had owned the P-12 prior to Wallick. In addition to the work of Feist, there are also original black-line illustrations and lithographic reproductions of drawings by Robert L. Parks that depict Wallick, Tosch, and Mucklestone with the P-12.
Subseries B. Assorted Restoration Projects (1965-1992) is a small subseries dating from 1965 to 1992. The subseries contains financial records, articles of incorporation, bylaws, meeting minutes, job descriptions, notes, correspondence, articles, board of directors' member directory, insurance records, pilot information, flight records, agreements, checklists, workorders, warranty policy, proposal, and technical documents for aircraft. These materials provide documentation on Wallick’s endeavors related to aircraft restoration and maintenance, aside from his work on the P-12 aircraft. The topics covered are insurance, maintenance, and his work on the Cessna 210 float plane. The companies within the files that Wallick worked directly with are Juliett Limited, Tosch Aircraft Industries, Great Circle Corporation, as well as Cedar River Hangar.
