Photograph album, 1917-1918

File — Box: World War I Oversize Box 1, Folder: Oversize folder
Photograph album, 1890-1950 (bulk 1917-1918). The album contains three hundred ninety-four (394) black and white photographs documenting the U.S. Naval service of C. E. Roy at the Key West Naval Air Station in Florida during World War I. The album is constructed from a U.S. Navy ledger book, into which Roy pasted photographs. The binding on the book is missing and most of the pages are loose. The inside front cover of the album includes a photo portrait of Roy accompanied by handwritten service history notes, along with "Rules of the Road at Sea." The section of pages at the end of the album are empty, but there is one final photograph on the inside back cover of a street in Key West.

Images feature:
  • Shots of Key West and area, including scenic views of streets, beaches, and the harbor; notable buildings such as the fort at Dry Tortugas, hotels, homes, churches, and schools; some aerial views; and a "Remember the Maine" monument.

  • Aircraft including blimps, biplanes, float planes; aircraft in flight, in formation, parked in hangars, and a number of wrecks; and a few model airplanes. Planes include primarily floatplane variants of Curtiss models such as the Curtiss N-9.

  • Fellow Navy men and women including formal group shots of various contingents such as the 6th Regiment, bird's-eye views of men in review formation, "yeomanettes," engaged in leisure activities, traveling at train stations, and even a few shots of a mock funeral.

  • Navy facilities such as the guard house, pay office, officers' quarters, athletic club, boat houses, and radio rooms.

  • A set of photos of aerial cameras.

  • Views of Navy ships including the U.S.S. Cincinnati, Salem, and Ohio.

  • Events such as a Liberty Loan parade, baseball games, and Fourth of July celebrations.

  • Assorted photos of family and friends.
Locations include Key West, Dry Tortugas, Miami, Daytona (Florida); Great Lakes, Chicago (Illinois); Rock River, Kilbourn City (Wisconsin).

The album also contains a few pieces of ephemera and other materials:
  • One (1) pressed flower.

  • Letter, Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.) Private George Harles Post No. 198 to Roy, September 16, 1935. Thanks him for his participation in a recruiting event.

  • One (1) pressed boutonniere.

  • Receipt, John V. May, Funeral Director, February 27, 1950. Receipt for costs paid by Ronald Roy relating to the funeral of Cecilia K. Roy.
