Contents of Collection
The last series in the collection is Series III. Personal Documents (1928-2018) is divided into the following subseries:
Subseries A. Awards and Associations (1965-2018) consists of membership cards, certificates, correspondence, clippings, invitations, programs, meeting minutes, mileage reports, bylaws, photographs, typed speeches, program outline, brochure, booklet, notes, steering committee list, poems, decals, applications, invoices, and a handwritten biographical narrative.
These documents provide insight into Wallick’s involvement with associations like the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, Washington Pilots Association, and Quiet Birdmen. In addition, there is documentation of his work with The Museum of Flight throughout the years where he served as a Board Member, and attended events. The Museum presented Wallick the Pathfinder Award in 1999 for his contribution to aviation. There are photographs, an invitation, program, and a typed speech prepared by Wallick for the award ceremony. In addition, Wallick received the Chanute Flight Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1983 and there is correspondence, an invitation, and program for the event.
Subseries B. Certification and Identification Records (1936-2003) includes Wallick’s educational records from Independence High School, Independence, Kansas that include his high school transcript and diploma examination statements, as well as his college transcripts from Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, where he graduated in 1949 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In addition, there are records related to Wallick’s pilot certifications that consist of certificates, applications, questionnaires, qualification records, and identification cards, one of which includes his photograph. His identification records include Wallick’s passports, additional photographs, and official applications.
Subseries C. Military Records (1942-1955) is an assortment of both textual and visual materials that document Wallick’s time serving in the United States Navy. The records consist of his military orders, endorsements, forms, correspondence, brochures, pamphlets, certificates, and vouchers. Included among the documents is a scrapbook created by Wallick that chronicles this time period of his life while enlisted in the Navy. The scrapbook is comprised of photographs of Wallick in uniform, images of Wallick with family and his fellow servicemen, and other snapshots of personal events, as well as clippings, correspondence, and certificates. In addition to the scrapbook, there is a mix of personal snapshots and official Navy photographs of Wallick featured in uniform alongside a Vought F4U Cosair, as well as piloting the aircraft. There are also many images of the Vought F4U Cosair aircraft in flight formation.
Subseries D. Visual Materials (1928-1984) is a small subseries that is made up of 58 photographs and 92 slides capturing Wallick’s childhood, family, and life with his children that includes family events, graduations, and camping trips. There are photographs of assorted aircraft, some of which were flown at the family events pictured. In addition, there is documentation of Wallick’s sixtieth birthday party where he celebrated with family, friends, and coworkers.
Subseries E. Assorted Files (1944-2005) consist of documents and ephemera collected by Wallick that includes clippings, articles, aeronautical charts with annotations, aviation commemorative ephemera, photocopies of cartoons related to the pilot profession, along with copies of a poem by George Stutsman titled “Gentleman Pilot” that is inscribed to Wallick. In addition, there are correspondence files that contain holiday cards, one of which is to Wallick from and signed by Prince Philip of Great Britian. There are also invitations, announcements, brochures, clippings, notes, manuscript drafts, class of 1941 Independence High School correspondence, reunion roster, and photographs. An item of note is a printed 38-page transcript of an oral history interview with Wallick and Brien Wygle conducted by the Boeing Archives in 1990.
