In this three-part oral history, fighter ace James B. Morehead discusses his military service with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. In parts one and two, he describes his wartime experiences as a fighter pilot, including his time in the Southwest Pacific Theater with the 17th Provisional Pursuit Squadron and 8th Fighter Squadron. Topics discussed include his squadron’s assignments in Australia and Indonesia, the Javanese campaign and evacuation in early 1942, and a combat mission near Melville Island where he scored several aerial victories. Note that spots of audio distortion are present in the original recording.

In part three, he continues to describe his wartime experiences in Australia and Indonesia. Topics discussed include conditions in Australia and Indonesia, encounters with Japanese forces, and notable moments from the Javanese campaign. Special focus on a combat mission over Java on February 23, 1943 in which Morehead scored aerial victories against two Japanese bombers.
