Series IV. Research Files, circa 1918-2003

 Series — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

These files, comprised of 19 cubic feet of material (approximately 2,260 files), include a variety of types of documents including 3-view drawings, aircraft specifications, copies of articles, copies of NASM historical aircraft listing cards, various reports (such as airplane information reports, crash reports, flight test reports, monthly operations reports, tactical suitability reports, and technical reports), and various notes. The files are arranged following the NASM Directory of Airplanes with other subjects mixed in alphabetically. The majority of subjects are aircraft manufacturers or model names, though some files are more general such as ones on military operations, bases, types of aircraft, and serial numbers; groups and organizations; specific air races; and subjects like flight attendants, landing gear, women pilots, or wind tunnels. A small number of files are on people and include biographical information. A spreadsheet file-level inventory has been created for this series and is available upon request.
