Biographical Note

James Floyd Smith was born on October 17, 1884 in Illinois. His family later relocated to Oregon. Smith was a test pilot and instructor for Glenn Martin. Smith also manufactured and invented parachutes, starting the Smith Parachute Company in San Diego, California with one of his sons, Prevost Floyd Smith. It later became the Prevost Smith Parachute Company. On April 18, 1956 Smith died of cancer.
