Biographical Note

Guenther Hans Pomer was born on September 25, 1919 in Berlin, Germany to Anna Hedwig Rossellek and Johannes Pomerehnke. The family immigrated to the United States in 1925. The family moved to Havana, Cuba and he graduated from Candler College in 1937 before returning to the United States. Pomer became a naturalized citizen and served in the Civil Air Patrol and for the United States Air Force Base Unit during World War II, from October 1942 through May 1946.

Post-war, Pomer worked as a engineer and was active as a member in many professional societies, including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He worked for The Boeing Company from 1961 until his retirement in 1990.

Pomer married Virginia Perkins Ashbaugh (-1974) on September 9, 1947 and the couple had two children, Kenneth (-2014) and Shirley. In 1949, Pomer graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering. After his first wife died, Pomer married Janice [maiden name unknown], although the couple divorced in 1990. Guenther Hans Pomer died on December 27, 2017.

Contents of the Collection

The collection is comprised of a scrapbook with primarily black-and-white photographs featuring women and men in Navy uniforms, aircraft in flight, and military personnel and civilians in both casual and posed settings, circa 1930s-1950s. Most of the images are military-related with some depicting members of the Pomer family. The scrapbook also has a certificate of membership for the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences and three Pomer family children's report cards.
