Biographical Note

Samuel H. Auld, Jr. was an electronics engineer and inventor who worked with William P. Lear.

Samuel, also called Sam, was born to Samuel H. Auld, Sr. and Wilda Jackson Auld on September 16, 1925 in Pasadena, California. He graduated from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California and soon got a job working with William P. Lear.

Auld worked with William P. Lear over many years, including on the Lear Jet as head of the Electronics Division and Vice-President of Research and Development at Lear Jet Corporation. He was an electronics engineer and, with Lear, pioneered the 8-track tape deck. He also held many additional patents of his own. During his career, Auld was a member of many organizations, including the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

Auld married Evelyn L. Maydeck on June 15, 1952 and the couple had three children. Samuel H. Auld, Jr. died on February 20, 1996.
