Biographical Note

Georges Guynemer was born on December 24, 1894 in Paris, France. He joined the French Air Service in 1914 as a mechanic but gained acceptance into pilot training in 1915. Guynemer earned fighter ace status in February 1916, earning a total of 54 victories before he failed to return from a mission on September 11, 1917. Georges Guynemer was confirmed as missing in action on Septmber 25, 1917.

Contents of the Collection The collection is comprised of forty-two (42) black-and-white photographs depicting aircraft and military personnel of World War I and World War II. The photographs were purchased by Zwar; no personal connection to the subjects of the photographs is known. There is also one piece of ephemera, a "Smileage Book" which holds ration coupons for "military entertainments."The photographs vary in size, from 3x5 to 6x8".
