Biographical Note

Chester William Nimitz was born February 24, 1885 in Fredericksburg, Texas. He served as a fleet admiral in the United States Navy, and played a major role in World War II as the Commander in Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet. Nimitz had a long and successful career in the Navy, and died on February 20, 1966 from complications due to a stroke and pneumonia. Nimitz was buried with full military honors beside his wife at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.
