Historical Note

Hamilton Field, later known as Hamilton Air Force Base, began construction in 1932 and was completed in 1935. The facilty was in service from 1935 until 1974, when it was decommissioned. In 1983, the field was transerred to the United Stated Army until its final closure in 1988. Ownership was tranferred and the area was redeveloped for public and private usage, as well as a tidal wetland restoration project.

Content Description This collection consists of notes by Joe P. Doetsch related to his work inspecting B-17B aircraft from about 1939-1940. There are 22 loose pages of notes which appear to have been cut from a notebook, an additional couple sheets of handwritten notes, and three pages of typed aircraft lists. The notebook pages document airplane serial number, its destination, propellor numbers, engine numbers, and other remarks such as pilot name. Additional pages document problems with the aircraft. Abstract Harold W. Zipp was an engineer at the Boeing Company for forty years. The collection documents his career, particularly his tenure in Wichita, Kansas, with diaries, photographs and other documents.
