Historical Note

The 301st Fighter Squadron was first activated on February 19, 1942 Tuskegee Army Air Field, Alabama during World War II. It was one of four African-American units to enter combat, specifically in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. The unit received a Distinguished Unit Citation for an escort mission in March 1945. Shortly after the unit flew its last mission of World War II in April 1945. Upon return to the United States, it was inactived on October 19, 1945.

In 1947, The unit was again activated and has continued until its present day designation as a United States Air Force Reserve squadron, assigned to the 325th Operations Group, stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.
