Historical Note: Johnston Atoll Airport

Johnston Atoll Airport is an airfield located on the Johnston Atoll in the United States Minor Outlying Islands, in the Pacific Ocean several hundred kilometers southwest of Hawaii. Built in 1941, it was an active U.S. military facility during the latter half of the 20th century. The airport was shut down in 2005 and the runway is not maintained; it is now used only in emergencies.

Harold W. Zipp was an engineer at the Boeing Company for forty years. The collection documents his career, particularly his tenure in Wichita, Kansas, with diaries, photographs and other documents.
