Biographical Note

John Alexander Douglas McCurdy was born on August 2, 1886 in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. In 1906 he graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in mechanical engineering. Soon after, in 1907, he and school friend Frederick W. Baldwin joined the Aerial Experiment Association, founded by Alexander Graham Bell.

In 1910, he was the first Canadian to be issued a pilot's license. McCurdy continued to set aviation records and innovate in the field of aviation and aeronautics. He died on June 25, 1861.
