The United States Army Air Forces (1941-1947; USAAF or AAF) were the military aviation service of the United States of America during and immediately after World War II, successor to the United States Army Air Corps and the direct predecessor of the United States Air Force.

Contents of the Collection The Ralph L. Gjefle World War II Collection is a small collection that contains primarily textual materials relating to Gjefle's World War II experience, circa 1942-1945. The materials were collected by Gjefle, who served as a pilot in the China-Burma theater during the war. Materials include a 1943 Enlisted Man's pass and a 1942 physical fitness record card for Gjefle, as well as 1944 graduation invites for Class 44-D from Marfa Army Air Force Pilot School at Marfa Army Air Field, Texas....

Contents of the Collection The Stanley L. Marcus World War II Collection contains over 150 World War II survey and aeronautical maps, collected by Stanley L. Marcus during his service as a pilot in World War II. It is unknown if he collected the maps or if they were given to him. Most of the maps cover various areas of Great Britain, but other locations within Europe are also represented (see Index). Abstract William Orthman (1911-1990) was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He served in the China-Burma-India Theater as Public Relations Officer. The collection is comprised of 340 photographs and a small amount of textual materials from his 1945-1946 service.

Abstract Archival materials relating to the missions of the United States Army Air Forces 498th Bombardment Group in 1944-45. The Museum of Flight's Boeing B-29 Superfortress was of this group and material in this collection reflect the activities of the aircraft during that time period. Many of the charts are annotated for specific missions and some contain identified targets.
